Five things to do in Walloon on a Saturday

Walloon is not a big town, but it repays an unhurried Saturday. Here’s a little loop we like.

1. Start with a walk in Henry Lawson Bicentennial Park

Pull up opposite the state school and spend twenty minutes with the Babies of Walloon memorial and the Henry Lawson lectern. Read the poem carved into the railway sleepers. It is a quiet, moving place and a good way to set the tone for the day.

2. Let the kids loose on the playground

The park doubles as one of the best family playgrounds in the Ipswich region — a sway fun glider, spring platform, oodle swing, omni spinner, climbing dome, slides, swings, and a skate bowl for the older ones. Pack a BBQ pack and use the sheltered picnic areas.

3. Stroll past the historic railway station

A short walk from the park, the 1860s-era Walloon station is worth a look even if you are not catching a train. The old rail corridor has seen freight, coal, butter, and soldiers over the years.

4. Pub lunch at the Walloon Saloon

The Saloon is the town’s pub, and on a Saturday afternoon it is exactly what you want: honest country food, a cold beer, and regulars who will say g’day. Perfect after a morning in the park.

5. Finish with a drive through Highland Walloon

If you are curious about how the town is growing, head up to the Highland Walloon development on the hilltop. The views back over the locality are beautiful, especially as the afternoon light softens.
